Hi everyone,

7th February 2009
I hope you’re getting opportunities to enjoy this slight thaw – nearly 40° this afternoon!  Yesterday a very regular customer remarked on how many new things we have in the store and she is quite right.  Even in the middle of February Michelle, the owner, has beautiful new clothes, gifts and jewelry arriving every week so there is always something fresh to delight you.  Of course this week lots of you are thinking about Valentine’s Day. Where I grew up the tradition was that Valentine’s Day was reserved for romantic intrigue, focusing on the Victorian custom of anonymous cards, flowers and chocolates with the inevitable consequence that those without romantic entanglements felt bereft in some way.  In the ten years I’ve lived here in the States I have come to truly appreciate the more American way of celebrating Valentine’s Day that can include anyone we love and all the different types of love.  How wonderful to have a day in our calendar that prompts us to tell people we love them and how much better might it be if we had more of those days!  Here at Coyote Moon we have an abundance of tokens of affection and we’re always happy to help you find one that strikes just the right note for the people you want to honor next week.

photoHere’s what’s new…
* Lots of pretty cardigans and sweaters in bright and cheerful colors. The pink one I’m wearing in the photo is wonderfully soft cotton and we have a terrific selection of shapes and styles ranging from casual to classically elegant.

* Great news styles of long-sleeve cotton tees in lovely Spring colors. One is a slightly fitted u-neck and the other a more boxy cut with three-quarter length sleeves. These give a cheerful touch of color to brighten up a layered outfit right now and they’ll be super on their own when the weather really warms up.

* A collection of coordinating separates from a new designer who blends sustainable fibers with beautiful low-impact dyes to create fashionable, high-quality and eco-friendly clothes. The colors are earthy and these pieces are a hemp/organic cotton blend. I especially love the long A-line raspberry roll-top skirt with a diagonal seam – very feminine.

* The latest collection of mid-weight linen from FLAX, featuring a range of blues with bright whites. Pairing the indigo with the periwinkle makes a nicely relaxed but complementary ensemble.

* Gorgeous new colors of the highest quality Tencel blouses from Tianello, including some exquisite Bemberg prints. These are such classic pieces that people who buy one often come back for another color, and another…..

* Lots of new jeans and trousers.

* Really chic hair clips from France in mock tortoiseshell with touches of color or shimmer and in plenty of different sizes and styles. The ones that caught my eye are claw clips that are flat on one side and curved on the other so that the hinge sits to one side rather than facing straight out – it really allows the beauty of the clip to be seen.

Of course, we have plenty of cards and gifts featuring hearts and flowers but also gifts that capture the subtler and sometimes complex loves that you might be looking to express this week. Come on in and browse.

I’ll leave you this week with some words from Awakening Through Love, Unveiling Your Deepest Goodness by John Makransky. This book about love and compassion is rooted in the tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and it starts, in the very first chapter, by explaining that in order to discover love’s transformative and liberating power we must first receive love more fully. Only then can we offer it more inclusively until finally it becomes a reflex from deep in our core. The author offers some meditation practices on receiving love and then writes the following:

“As you become familiar with the meditation of receiving love, several things unfold. First, more and more benefactors occur to you – so many people you had forgotten come crowding in upon you! Aunts, uncles, cousins, grade school teachers, a counselor at camp, a special coach, a smiling stranger who waved you ahead in line, persons who quietly mentored and influenced you in positive ways that you had never consciously acknowledged. Indeed, over time, this simple practice can reintroduce you to your whole life! Many people who were essential to your thriving, long lost to your conscious mind, are rediscovered through this practice. They become a potent influence in your life once again, as if you were joyfully reunited with a host of long-lost friends and mentors.”

I hope you have some time this week to envision the benefactors in your life (pets count too!) and receive the gentle, healing energy of that radiance.
